DIOPSIDE 

- Diopside has several varieties, including a chromium-rich gem variety called chrome diopside. Violan is a rare blue variety found in some localities in Italy.

- There is a green "cat's eye" variety that contains minute inclusions, probably of rutile.

- There is a dark variety, with included rutile needles aligned so as to produce a 4- rayed star, hence the name star diopside.

 

- Diopside can be found in USA, Russia, Italy, Austria, Germany, Sri Lanka, Brazil, Myanmar, Madagascar, South Africa and Finland.

- It is named after Greek word for "double appearance" because of its crystal shape.

 

- Diopside is typically white, blue, bright and pale green to yellowish or greenish brown with a vitreous luster. The crystals are transparent to translucent and occur as short prismatic crystals. This crystal can also appear as compact, granular, columnar and massive shapes.

- Mineral specimens of diopside can be very striking in appearance, and of interest to mineral collectors. Some specimens have been known to fluoresce.
